Liberals announce $10 million in funding towards multi-sport facility in Hobart

The Tasmanian Liberal Party has pledged $10 million if reelected to design, plan and construct a multi-sports indoor facility in Glenorchy, which would be used for multiple sports including gymnastics, netball, basketball, volleyball, futsal and martial arts.

Gymnastics Tasmania sees its inclusion in this proposed development as vital to capitalise on a period of strong membership growth.

"Gymnastics Tasmania is committed to working with Government at all levels, as well as local gymnastics clubs to develop new and improved facilities state-wide. The proposed development in Glenorchy is an integral step in our Facilities Strategy and 2018-2021 Gymnastics in Tasmania Strategic Plan,” Gymnastics Tasmania President Leigh Oswin said.

“Investment like this builds upon the strong foundations the Gymnastics community has been growing over recent years, and works to capitalise on our unprecedented growth trajectory.”

‘We are excited to partner with other key sporting providers in Tasmania and work together towards positive physical activity and health outcomes in the community”

The investment includes $1 million for consultation and design work in 2018-19, $1 million for planning approvals and site preparations in 2019-20 and $8 million for when construction begins in 2020-21.

Gymnastics Tasmania’s membership grew strongly to 6,200 in 2017, and has identified the Glenorchy region as a growth opportunity.
